Word from the Dark Side – refugee holidays, AI breakaways, shop teacher bust displays and happy horse chicken plays.

4 in 5 refugees living in Sweden have vacationed in the country they fled from:

A survey conducted by polling firm Novus on behalf of the Swedish online newspaper Bulletin revealed that 79 percent of refugees who claim to be fleeing war or persecution have voluntarily returned to their home country since making the trip to Sweden.

According to the survey, they do not wish, however, to return home permanently. When asked whether they plan to permanently return to their country of birth in the future, just 2 percent say they do, while 16 percent say maybe — 81 percent of those who arrived in Sweden from non-European countries say they do not, primarily because they believe Sweden to be a better country to raise their children.

40% of evacuees from Afghanistan have left Japan over poor support:

Between October and December of last year, the ministry provided the embassy staff and their families with lodgings in Tokyo, meals and salaries.

But several of the staff told Kyodo News that they were pressured to leave Japan, having been told that their work contracts would end in late August.

They said ministry staff visited their homes and told them that living in Japan would be difficult and that a decision on whether to stay or leave the country would have to be discussed with their families.

They also said the ministry told them that should they return to Afghanistan, their travel expenses would be shouldered and they would receive a 20 percent salary raise.

Most of the local embassy staff who fled Afghanistan speak English rather than Japanese, making it extremely difficult for them to find work. The public job placement office Hello Work said they had only a 1 percent chance of securing work in Japan, according to an evacuee.

Other factors compounded their struggles. Their children were unable to attend school until spring, when Japan’s school year starts, and only spouses and children could be brought to Japan, not other immediate family members such as parents and siblings.

The ministry’s Second Middle East Division has denied encouraging their return to Afghanistan.

I’m on the side of the black girl. She has a weirdly aquatic appearance, including eyes on the sides of her head like a fish, plus she went to all the trouble of being called Haile Bailey. Let her have this one.

Man in Western Australia killed by pet kangaroo.

If you find an orphaned joey you can take care of it, but once they get big, they revert to their wild nature.

In the bush they aren’t dangerous at all because a mob will hop away as soon as it sees a human at a distance. They only become hazardous once humans start getting too close, i.e. by feeding them or trying to raise them at home.

That’s it.

I don’t support a black little mermaid. I’m tired of everything being retconned for positive discrimination/stronk whamen/etc for one thing. If you really want to get down to it, as someone said, black skin makes no sense* if you live underwater in low light. This naturally triggered the usual suspects with typical hilarity.

*Putting aside the fact that we’re talking about mermaids, obviously.

You got me didn’t you? You nearly got me with the Jared Taylor comment, but I took this one hook line and sinker.

“Man in Western Australia killed by pet kangaroo.”

I remember you warning someone about them. I saw a video of a man, a tough man, punching a kangaroo that had a hold of his dog. He gave it a good hard shot. The kangaroo didn’t even flinch (but it did let go of the dog).

Best to avoid them, as you said.

There was this little kerfluffle at the last Olympics in one of the equestrian events when one of the team or staff on the sidelines, a girl, gave one of the horses a light punch on the butt to move him away from the rails. Animal abuse! I looked at that and it didn’t even count as a love tap. A horse hardly registers a hit like that. Not to mention that the girl riding the horse at the time was using a bit and spurs that cause orders of magnitude more pain and discomfort than that punch did.

I’ve had to whack a steer in the face with a log. It was no big deal to him, but it did settle him down — he was bucking and spinning around me and I didn’t want to get pasted.

Large animals are tough. Humans are squishy.

“Large animals are tough. Humans are squishy.”

Even medium sized animals eg sheep. People have forgotten this through living in cities and working indoors far away from said animals. Then you end up with animal welfare morons whom I hate with the fire of a thousand suns.

Yep. Severian will appreciate this one because it relates to pitching. When I first got my current breeding goat buck, he was only about six months old. Now as an adult he’s quite good-natured, but he was pretty wild when he was young, but he was still small, less than 100 lb. I was in a stall with him shortly after getting him. I think I was about to give him some grain or something. He got impatient with me and cracked me in the leg with his horns. Now, he was already right up against me and started the hit from only a couple inches away; he didn’t have time to rear up and throw his weight into it (like they do), but those horns hit me in the leg like a baseball bat. It was pretty cool — he obviously had the instinctive knowledge that a baseball pitcher or boxer has to work at: how to multiply the momentum and leverage of each joint in his head, neck, shoulder and legs so that in a very small amount of space he was able to generate nearly bone-cracking levels of force.

I’m glad he hasn’t tried that trick on me now that he’s more than 200 lb. and has horns more than a foot and a half long.

I’m always extremely careful in the horn radius of any of my cattle because their strength is on a whole different level. They can send you flying just turning their head to flick at a fly.

I had a ram (breed is polled fortunately) who was just a grumpy bad tempered old SOB. Good genetics though. Anyway, I watched him sweep my MIL’s legs out sideways and rotate her 90 degrees about her hips. She was warned (also unharmed fortunately). When I had them in the race he got me good a couple of times too.

When I was a kid I knew a old guy who got horned in the mouth by a cranky old scrub bull that had been mismustered a few years. Pinned him against the side of the yards then extracted the horn out the side of his cheek. He was OK, but it took a lot of stitches.

Not all farm animals are psychotic killers but they’re not sweet cutesy anthropomorphised furry critters either. They want to live, and if that means going through or over you, so be it. Disney has a lot to answer for.
