Love is a fickle thing and so are political alliances.
Dr Tedros, the director-general of the World Health Organization, was backed by China because he rose to prominence in Ethiopia’s brutal TPLF regime – exactly the kindred spirits that the CCP likes.
While the agreement was probably never spoken aloud and certainly never written down, presumably they understood that China would help out Ethiopia with finance, infrastructure, diplomatic support etc. while Tedros would be amenable to Chinese desires in his role at the WHO.
In my opinion. Don’t come for me.
But just at the wrong time, the minority TPLF lost power in Ethiopia and Prime Minister Abiy took over. A war broke out as the TPLF resisted the new government from its ethnic Tigray stronghold in the north of the country.
The TPLF lost and have fled to the hills.
China has apparently not participated in this conflict. Why would they? China needs resources to flow from the interior of Africa to its east coast factories via the port in Djibouti and perhaps one day through a new port they propose to build in Eritrea.
Whether the resources are extracted from Ethiopia under a malleable ethnic junta or a malleable multi-ethnic coalition doesn’t matter. Sesame seeds are sesame seeds.
With Tedros’ TPLF out of power and China cooperating with his people’s bitter enemies, what hold do they have over him? If none, will he dare stand up to them?
Well, well, well; look what we have here:
The head of the World Health Organization says he is “disappointed” Chinese officials have not finalised permission to allow a team of experts into China to examine the origins of COVID-19.
WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, in a rare critique of Beijing, said members of the international scientific team began departing from their home countries in the past 24 hours as part of an arrangement between the WHO and the Chinese Government.
“Today, we learned that Chinese officials have not yet finalised the necessary permissions for the team’s arrival in China,” Dr Tedros said during a news conference in Geneva.
“I’m very disappointed with this news, given that two members had already begun their journeys and others were not able to travel at the last minute, but had been in contact with senior Chinese officials,” he said.
It may turn out to be a simple, bureaucratic balls-up. However, Tedros would not have made a public statement like that in January last year.
Update: The Chinese foreign ministry’s statement suggests it is not just a balls-up:
“The origins problem is very complex. To ensure that the work of the global experts group in China is successful, we need to carry out the necessary procedures and relevant concrete plans. Currently both sides are still in negotiations on this,” Hua said.
Now that Teddy’s unleashed they are perhaps worried that this might be a serious scientific mission to find the truth. The Chinese leadership may or may not know what that truth is, but whatever it turns out to be is likely to be embarrassing to the CCP.
Any nation willing to support the TPLF right now would probably gain quite a bit of influence in the WHO, but this is unlikely. The TPLF is very much on the nose and appears to be in a hopeless position anyway. Teddy and his Tigray brothers are going to have to take their stripes.
Perhaps Dr Tedros now has no incentive to do other than run his organization according to whatever he considers fair principles.
